How to Select a Suitable Helper

To select suitable maid for different family, it depends on age, educational background, personality, working experience, religious, here are some hints:

AGE

Young maids are suitable for taking care of baby and children, matured maids would be more appropriate for aged and handicaps.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Maids who have higher education or spoken English shall be selected for taking care of children. Some of the maids who have working experience in Singapore tend to have more fluency in English. Filipino and Nepalese usually can speak fair English with different accent from ours. It is much better to select those maids can speak in Cantonese or kind of Chinese dialects for taking care of aged and handicaps and it is suggested to select those have nursing training. Maids from Indonesia and Nepal undergo training before their arrival, thus they can speak in Cantonese as well.

Filipino - Higher education: High school or University.
Nepalese - education level with Junior high to High school
Thai - education level with Primary to High school
Indonesian - usually Junior high (We offer Indonesian maid with University degrees: highly proficient in English with American Accents)

CHARACTERISTIC

Filipino - There are about 130,000 maids; the highest compared to other origin maids in Hong Kong. They are generally more influenced by their fellows. Some of the Filipinos have good understanding of the Hong Kong Employment Ordinance that they have the ability to manipulate the gray area of the Ordinance, such as maids imposing threats to terminate contracts to negotiate for better conditions and better employers, may possibly occur. Hence some of the employers have chosen Indonesian maids who are more loyal and obedient.

Indonesian - there are approximately 100,000 maids, the second largest group of maids and going to be the first largest group. The economic situation in Indonesia is not as good as that of the Philippines. Indonesian maids tend to be less corrupted; moreover, they are more concerned with the currency that they earned, therefore they tend to be more obedient.

Thai - there are about 5,000 maids from Thailand. The economic situation in Thailand is relatively good, therefore, Thai maids are generally less motivated.

Nepalese - the least number in Hong Kong. The employment rate in Nepal is rather low, so they have more intention to working in Hong Kong. Most of them are Buddhists which sound obedient. Moreover, the fact that they usually know a decent amount of English has convinced some employers to consider hiring maids from Nepal instead of from Philippines. Visa application for Nepalese had been no long be accepted by the Immigration Department since 6 June, 2005

WORKING EXPERIENCE

Maids from Indonesia and Nepal will undergo a four-month training program which including learning the culture of Hong Kong, Chinese cooking skills and the Cantonese language. Filipinos are generally smarter and tend to be faster learners.

RELIGION

Indonesian - mostly Muslims and some Christians
Filipinio - Most of them are Catholics or Christians
Thai - 80% of them are Buddhists and some are Catholics
Nepalese - 90% of them are Hindus and Buddhists
